Dr. Kon grew up in Berkeley, California, and recieved his Bachelor's degree in philosophy at the University of California Berkeley. After undergraduate, he studied in Paris, France and then attended McGill medical school in Montreal. Dr. Kon then returned to California for residency at Stanford, and then did dual fellowship training in pediatric critical care and medical ethics in San Francisco. After training, he joined the faculty at the University of California Davis, then moved to San Diego as the medical director of the pediatric ICU at the Navy hospital, and is currently the pediatric ICU medical director at Community Children's at Community Medical Center. Dr. Kon has over 20 years of experience in the pediatric intensive care unit and healthcare ethics, and has authored or co-authored over 100 publications in leading medical journals with a focus on decision-making for critically ill patients, including international guidelines on pediatric sepsis, family support, shared decision-making, and futility. He is the president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities and a past-chair of the Society of Critical Care Medicine's Ethics Committee. Dr. Kon is a fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine and of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and has served in multiple national leadership positions for the U.S. military, the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Kon enjoys backpacking, hiking, camping, and body boarding with his wife and two children, and running with his dog.
