About
Bone Densitometry, also known as a DEXA scan (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry), is the evaluation of your bone density and potential bone density loss. DEXA scans utilize a very minimal amount of x-ray to acquire this information. Typically, this involves scanning the lower spine and hips to acquire the Bone Mineral Density (BMD) measurement.
Appointment
A DEXA scan requires an appointment and a physician order. Call our office to schedule an appointment.
Exam Preparation
This exam requires little to no special preparation. You should not take calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before your exam. Tell your doctor and the technologist if there is a possibility you are pregnant or if you recently had a barium exam or received an injection of contrast material for a CT or radioisotope scan.
The test is relatively simple and the actual scan time takes about 5 – 10 minutes to complete. Patients should wear loose fitting comfortable clothing, free of metal such as buckles, metal buttons and zippers. Leave jewelry at home and wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to wear a gown.
