A hospitalist is a physician whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. They are focused around a site of care (the hospital) rather than an organ (like cardiology) or a disease (like oncology). Unlike other medical specialties, hospitalists help manage patients through the continuum of hospital care, often seeing patients in the emergency room, following them into the critical care unit and organizing post-acute care. At Community Medical Center, we have hospitalists who care for inpatients in our adult units as well as pediatric hospitalists who care for infants to young adults in the pediatric unit & pediatric ICU.
Hospitalists provide a solution for adult and pediatric patients allowing primary care physicians to focus their time and attention on their office patients. Hospitalists work closely with the patients specialists and their primary care provider. This medical speciality can reduce patient lengths of stay up to 30 percent and can reduce hospital costs for patients by up to 20 percent.
