Community Medical Center Celebrates 5,000th Robotic-Assisted Surgery
March 13, 2025

Community Medical Center proudly celebrates its 5,000th robotic-assisted surgery using the da Vinci surgical systems.
“Reaching this milestone is a testament to the dedication of the physicians and robotics team,” said, Dr. Gary Harvey, OB/GYN at Community Medical Center. “The da Vinci robot allows us to perform procedures with better accuracy, less tissue damage, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times and better clinical outcomes. But what makes this program so successful is the team approach at Community. Having a dedicated robotics team means the physicians work with the same nurses and techs on each case so there is a cohesive group that work well together.”
The success of the robotics program at Community reflects the skill and dedication of surgeons and the entire team. As a sophisticated technology, specialized training is critical for success. Physicians are required to do a certain number of cases a year to maintain their credentialing and the robotic team also receives ongoing training.
Procedures performed with the Da Vinci robot include:
- Gallbladder, spleen removal, appendix
- Pelvic organ prolapse, uterus, ovary, ovarian cyst removal
- Prostate, bladder, kidney (total and partial) removal
- Colon resection and hernia repair
- Bariatrics
Community Medical Center remains dedicated to expanding access to robotic-assisted surgery, ensuring patients receive a high standard of care in Montana. The hospital is proud to be able to provide emergent robotic surgery after hours and on weekends to ensure all patients have access to the latest technology. Community has also introduced robotic-assisted spine surgery, robotic-assisted knee surgery in the past year and is planning to add an additional da Vinci robot.
